About BRICS-RI Communities of Practice (CoP)

The BRICS-RI Community of Practice (COP) is a multidisciplinary platform established under the BRICS Research Institute (BRICS-RI) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). It was created as part of the second phase of the NIHSS-funded BRICS Research Project (BRICS Project 2.0) to foster ongoing collaboration, knowledge exchange, and research innovation across BRICS nations.

The CoPs are designed to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, co-produce knowledge, and bridge the gap between academic research and real-world policy challenges. Through regular meetings, writing workshops, online forums, joint publications, and capacity-building initiatives, the BRICS-RI COP provides an inclusive and supportive environment for peer learning and mentorship.

A core function of the CoPs is the mentorship and development of Capacity Development Fellows (CDFs) from BRICS countries who are supported through structured research training, publication guidance, and international exposure. This mentorship initiative aims to build the next generation of BRICS researchers and leaders.

There are currently eight active Communities of Practice, each focused on a strategic theme:

  1. CoP – Tourism & Cultural Exchange
  2. CoP – BRICS public governance and sisterhood
  3. CoP – BRICS Economics & Entrepreneurship
  4. CoP – Agrarian and Rural Development
  5. CoP – Climate Action
  6. CoP – BRICS The Peace and Security
  7. CoP – BRICS in Africa

Each CoP is led by a multidisciplinary team and aligned with BRICS-RI’s mission to promote inclusive development, climate resilience, and multilateral cooperation. Together, these communities form an institutional backbone for knowledge exchange, mentorship, and collaborative research, contributing meaningfully to the long-term goals of the BRICS Research Institute.
