This CoP develops in favor of the BRICS’ second Pillar (Economic and Finance) and supports SDGs 8[Decent Work and Economic Growth], 9[Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure], 10[Reduced Inequalities], and 12[Responsible Consumption and Production].
The economies of the BRICS have grown tremendously over the past few years and with BRICS Plus members, it accounted for $30,8trillion with an average growth rate of 3,6% in 2023. In the post 2024 Kazan Summit, BRICS+ and partners account for 37,3% of the global DGP.
The objectives of this COP is to form a community, a network of scholars interested in conducting research in the field of BRICS Economics, BRICS Financing and conducting comparative research, developing policy positions; exchange of experience between scholars, organize training seminars, and personal consultations; writing scientific articles, books and participation in joint projects and grants.

Prof. Sergei Smirnov
Biography
Prof. Sergei Smirnov is an esteemed academic and consultant specialising in business process management, financial modeling, and management systems development. He obtained a PhD in 2005 and currently serves as an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics, at the St. Petersburg State University (SPbGU), in the Department of Business Economics, Entrepreneurship, and Innovations.
In addition to his primary role as an academic, Prof. Smirnov is a visiting lecturer at the Graduate School of Management (GSOM SPbGU), which is a distinguished institution ranked as the second-strongest business school in Eastern Europe in 2023. He also shares his expertise as a visiting lecturer at the Higher School of Economics (St. Petersburg campus), a globally recognised institution ranked in the TOP 100 of the QS World University Rankings by Economics & Econometrics. He lectures Business Process Management and Modeling, equipping future leaders with essential process optimisation and operational efficiency skills.
Beyond academia, Prof. Smirnov has extensive consulting experience, having participated in various projects for both private and state-owned enterprises in Russia. His expertise spans management consulting, business process optimisation, production line analysis and improvement, quality management (Lean Six Sigma), business process modeling, financial modeling, and investment consulting. His ability to bridge academic research with practical application makes him a sought-after expert in his field.
